About - Melaneia Warwick Contemporary Artist
Passport crop

I am a mulit-media artist. I enjoy the stretch and discovery of collaboration and am open to new project ideas. I have been involved in exciting and unique projects with a range of artists and writers. My work is inspired by my partly nomadic existence and my interest in the oral traditions of story telling. I combine media to create spaces where new stories can emerge.

The characters in my stories are inspired by objects spied, borrowed, gifted and collected. I'm fascinated by the tales they could tell and imagine their history. I'm considering where the object comes from, what has it endured and how will it be remembered.......

But of course these questions are also our own, human enquiries.......

When drawing, I use my hands to explore the contours and inner recesses of objects and then draw from memory and sensation. I make moulds, casts and models. I play. It may take weeks to effect the object’s transition from a stranger spotted in a dusty store to a casual acquaintance to a much-loved friend. The titles of my works and series are purposely slippery: Cast, for instance connotes notions of performance (my objects cast in roles) as well as implying ‘moulded,’ a nod to the sculptural quality of my painting process.

I am interested in an itinerant nature of drawing and pursue this within my sketchbook practice. I create drawinga in layers and always for journeys. The first layer is about prediction - I anticipate events, locations, people. I make more work in situ and add after the event. Sketchbooks can then be laid out and read like stories, offering the reader a chronological view on the work.
